Legislative Report

While Texas has fared better than other states during the current national recession, our revenues have weakened substantially as the national recession has taken its full effect on Texas.?Our state budget is expected to have a deficit of at least $10 billion when the legislature convenes in January.   The top three legislative leaders have called on state agencies to reduce spending by a 5 percent reduction over the next two years to help address the deficit.   While this may be a tough task for state agencies, it also provides the opportunity to thoroughly review all expenditures to make sure that all spending is efficient and necessary.   Legislators are also concerned about the potentially devastating effects the federal health care legislation will have on long-term costs and regulatory burdens.   Texas has faced budget deficits before, most recently in 2003, in which they produced a balanced budget without raising taxes.?It wonĄŻt be easy, but the conservative leadership has the ability to face this issue keeping the taxpayers in mind.
